Custom Barcode Engine vs Library: When to Build Your Own

5 min read

Off-the-shelf barcode libraries cover many use cases. When does it make sense to build a custom barcode engine?

Standard symbologies (Code 128, EAN, Data Matrix, etc.), moderate volume, and simple integration are well served by existing libraries. Use them unless you hit performance, compliance, or integration limits.

  • Multiple symbologies and strict compliance – You need a fixed set of symbologies with correct encoding (e.g. GS1, healthcare) and consistent decode behavior across scanners and cameras.
  • High volume – Batch label generation or decode pipelines at scale. A purpose-built engine can be tuned for your print and scan workflow.
  • Industrial or embedded – Integration with WMS, printers, or resource-constrained devices where library size or behavior is not a fit.

A dedicated generation and/or decoding engine with clear APIs, support for your chosen symbologies, and optional integration with existing systems. At Hendoi we build custom barcode engines for USA, Canada, and Chennai. Contact us for a technical consultation and quote.

Frequently asked questions

Consider it when you need strict compliance, very high throughput, or integration with industrial or embedded systems. For standard retail or simple apps, a library is often enough.

We support common linear (Code 128, Code 39, EAN/UPC) and 2D (Data Matrix, PDF417, QR) symbologies and can add or tune others. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
