Dynamic vs Static QR Codes: When to Use Which in 2026
6 min read
QR codes are everywhere—menus, posters, payments, business cards. But not all QR codes are the same. Static and dynamic codes serve different needs. This guide explains the difference and when to choose each so you can plan your next campaign or product.
A static QR code is fixed at creation. The link, text, or data is encoded once and cannot be changed. If you need to update the destination, you must print or share a new code. Static codes are simple, fast to generate, and do not require a backend or dashboard.
Best for: one-off payment links, business cards, permanent URLs, Wi‑Fi credentials, or any use where the target will not change.
A dynamic QR code points to a short URL or a redirect that you control. You can change where it goes at any time without reprinting the code. Most dynamic solutions also give you scan analytics: how many scans, when, and sometimes where. That makes them ideal for campaigns you want to tweak or measure.
Best for: marketing campaigns, restaurant menus, event check‑in, brochures, and anything where you want to edit the destination or track engagement.
- Payment links or vCards that rarely change
- Business cards and permanent contact info
- Simple Wi‑Fi or one-time sign-up links
- When you do not need analytics or edits after printing
- Marketing campaigns where you might change the landing page or offer by region
- Menus, events, or seasonal content you update often
- When you need scan counts, timing, or location data
- A/B tests or multiple destinations from the same printed code
Many businesses use static codes for payments and fixed links, and dynamic codes for marketing and operations. The right choice depends on whether you need to edit or track after the code is in the wild.
At Hendoi Technologies we build QR code applications for USA, Canada, and Chennai—including generators, scanners, and payment flows. We can help you choose and implement static or dynamic solutions that fit your goals.
Frequently asked questions
No. The data is embedded in a static code. To get dynamic behaviour you need a new code that points to a redirect or short URL you control.
Often yes—they usually need a backend, short URLs, and optional analytics. Cost depends on scale and features. We can scope a solution and quote.
For a fixed payment link or merchant ID, static is fine. For changing amounts, campaigns, or refund flows, a dynamic or app-driven flow is better. We build both.
