How to Get a Web App Built When You Do Not Know Where to Start

You have an idea for a web app but you’re not a developer and you don’t know where to start. Here’s a simple path that works.

Answer in plain language: Who is the app for? What’s the main thing they do (e.g. “log in, see their projects, add a task”)? What’s the one must-have for the first version? You don’t need to say “we need a React backend”—just “users need to see their data and update it.” That’s your product brief. One or two pages is enough.

Even rough: “User lands on home → logs in → sees dashboard → clicks Project → sees list → clicks one → edits and saves.” Or use a tool like Figma, Miro, or paper. The goal is to show “what screens and what happens,” not pixel-perfect design. Agencies use this to scope and quote.

Search for “web app development [your city or country]” or “web app development for startups.” Look for agencies that have built similar things (SaaS, dashboards, internal tools) and that work with non-technical founders. Many US and Canada founders use a team in Chennai; what matters is that they ask good questions and explain things clearly. Get 2–3 to talk to.

Send your one-pager and flows. Ask for: what they’ll build for v1, timeline, and price (fixed or capped). Ask what they need from you (e.g. access to existing tools, content, decisions). Compare proposals. Pick the one that fits your budget and that you trust to communicate. Don’t sign until scope and ownership (code, design) are clear.
