The consultant should ask: What are you trying to build or fix? Who’s it for? What’s the main outcome you want? They’re listening so they can give relevant advice, not a generic pitch. You should leave feeling they understood your situation.

They should reflect back what they heard and outline options: e.g. “For that, you’d need X and Y. We could do it as a full build, or start with a discovery and spec.” They might ballpark timeline and cost (“typically 8–12 weeks for that scope,” “roughly in the $X–$Y range”) without giving a formal quote yet. They should say what’s in and out of scope so you’re not surprised later.

A good consultation ends with a clear next step: “Send us a one-pager and we’ll send a proposal,” or “We’ll schedule a discovery call,” or “Here’s a resource that might help; reach out when you’re ready.” No “sign today or the offer expires” pressure. You should know what you need to do (or send) to move forward.
