Hiring someone to build an MCP server for your Claude app? Here’s what to look for so you get a server that works, is maintainable, and stays within budget.

They should have built or maintained at least one MCP server—not just “we do APIs” or “we’ve used Claude.” Ask: What did the server expose (tools/resources)? How did the client connect (stdio, HTTP)? What would they do differently next time? Vague answers are a red flag.

They don’t have to know your codebase on day one, but they should be comfortable with your language (TypeScript/Node or Python) and with how Claude discovers and invokes tools. Ask how they’d debug “Claude can’t see my tool” or “the wrong parameters are sent.” Practical answers signal real experience.

Look for: discovery (turning your idea into a tool list), design (names, parameters, errors), implementation, testing with a real client, and handover (docs, deployment, support). You want a fixed or capped scope and milestones, not open-ended “we’ll figure it out.”

They should ask about auth (who can call the server?), secrets (where are API keys stored?), and rate limits. They should plan for logging, errors, and basic monitoring. If they don’t bring this up, you should.

You’ll need async updates and some overlap for calls. Many US and Canada startups hire a Chennai team; what matters is responsiveness, clarity, and a single point of contact. Ask how they’ll keep you updated and how they handle timezone differences.
