What to Send a Mobile App Development Company Before They Start Work

Before your mobile app development company writes code, send them the right inputs. Here’s a practical list so they can start on time and on scope.

One to three pages: what the app does (e.g. “B2B dashboard for field reps”), who uses it, and the main features for v1. List what’s out of scope for the first release. Include success criteria (e.g. “Submitted to App Store and TestFlight working”). This becomes the basis for the contract and the backlog.

Even rough flows (e.g. “Login → Home → List → Detail → Submit”) or wireframes (Figma, Sketch, or PDF) help. You don’t need pixel-perfect UI; you need “what screens and what happens when.” If you have designs, send them. If not, the agency can propose flows and you approve before they design.

Logo, colours, fonts (or “we want something like X”). Links to apps or sites you like. This guides visual direction. If you have a design system or style guide, send it.

If the app talks to your backend: API docs (or base URL + auth method), test credentials, and any env (staging vs prod). If the backend doesn’t exist yet, say so—they may propose a simple API spec or mock first.

App Store / Play Console (or confirm they’ll use your account for submission), any third-party services (e.g. analytics, push), and how you’ll communicate (Slack, email, tool). Agree on who creates what and when.

When you need v1 (e.g. “TestFlight by March”). They’ll propose a schedule; align on milestones (design sign-off, alpha, beta, submission) and payment triggers. Put it in the contract.
