Where to Start With MCP Server Development If You Are Not a Developer

You’re not a developer but your product or workflow needs an MCP server so Claude (or another AI) can use your tools and data. Here’s where to start.

List the actions the AI should perform: “create a ticket,” “look up this customer,” “search our docs,” “run this report.” For each, note which system it touches (Jira, CRM, Notion, etc.) and whether it’s read-only or can change data. You don’t need technical detail—just “what” and “where.” This list is what you’ll hand to a developer or agency.

Look for agencies or contractors that explicitly offer MCP server development (or “AI infrastructure” / “Claude integrations”). Ask: “Have you built an MCP server before? Can you show an example?” If they can’t point to a real project, keep looking. Many US and Canada founders use a Chennai-based team that already does this.

Share your list and ask for a discovery call. A good team will ask clarifying questions and then propose a scope: e.g. “We’ll build 5 tools: A, B, C, D, E. Timeline 4 weeks. Price $X.” You should get a fixed or capped price and a clear “in scope” and “out of scope.”

If you’re not sure, ask for a pilot: e.g. two tools and one integration. You’ll see how they work, how they communicate, and whether the result fits your expectations. Then scale to the full list.
